Smoke 900 1995

Recently, I took a trip totalling over 1600 miles. On the 500 mile return trip, as I slowed to pay a toll, black smoke began billowing into the car through the air conditioning vents. Sometime later, it happened again. Does anyone know what could be causing the problem? I just had the car serviced (over $600). By the way, it is a 1995 960 sedan.
