Auto Transmission THUD 1800

73 ES automatic usually but not always gives a pronounced thud when it down shifts to first while coming to a stop. If I do not brake all the way to a stop but let off the brakes just before the downshift point it does not make the noise. Is the a. normal b. due to a u joint problem or c. an ominus sign?
