AMM question 700

The idle rpm's on my 1987 740 turbo jumped to better than 1200 rpm's Thursday. The problem has been corrected, but not without a puzzle.
When I removed the wiring connector fromn the AMM, rpm's jumped up to over 2000 rpm. Why?
