humidity problem inside 1988 740 700 1988

My 16 year old son has a 1988 740 with 188k miles which has a humidity problem. Not only did the rear defrost stop working a few days ago, but now the whole car is totally fogged up. The outside temp has been 40-60 degrees with a lot of rain. His AC worked perfectly this summer. The heat works perfectly now. I don't know how much of this problem is with a new driver learning about climate control in the car and how much is a real climate control problem. Can anyone please offer some advice? Thanks.
