It was a beautiful weekend, wifey was away so I cornered the '80 DL and
1. Changed thermostat
2. Changed water pump
3. Removed and thoroughly cleaned radiator
4. Changed timing belt
5. Changed tensioner
6. Changed intermediate & cam shaft seals (crankshaft was too intimidating and was clean anyway)
7. Changed alternator bushings
8. Changed drive belts and put it all back together and to the utter amazement of the entire neighborhood (doesn't anybody watch football any more?) -- it started right up. When the applause reached a crescendo I quickly shut it down. And when the crowd dispersed I started it back up because I knew it wasn't right. It won't idle right (very low at the outset) and can't be adjusted by the idle screw (either very low or very high RPM within about an eighth of a turn. My question is: what could I have done to mess the engine up other than the obvious timing belt issue? I know the camshaft and intermediate sprocket guides aligned with the marks on the belt and the crank seemed in the right position as when I removed it. Could I have missed a notch? I drove it around the neighborhood (they thought it was a victory lap) in first & second and it's very slow to accelerate at the low end of each gear and then seems to cach up and run OK. The only other ignition item I touched was the rotor cap. Where should I start? (I'm not a mechanic and never even played one on TV).
