Are all turbos the same? (Identifying turbo types) 700 1986

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can tell me an easy way to identify the manufacturer and type of turbo on a '86 or '87 740 car. I have an '87 740 Turbo car with a broken crank (but presumably good turbo) and can get an '86 740 Turbo (whole car) with a good engine, faultless body, but dead turbo for $1K. I would like to know if I can take the turbo off the '87 dead engine and put it on the '86 good engine and...presto! Good car again.

The mechanical work is familiar to me, so the real issue is: is the '86 turbo oil-cooled? Is that easy to spot? I know that the '87 turbo is water-cooled (that is easy to spot). And would there be a difference in form factor or anything like that that would keep me from switching turbos on these two cars?

I've looked through all the FAQ's and Swedish Bricks VIN tables, but I don't see a way to easily identify the type and manufacturer of the turbo for a given car.

If anyone can take a moment to lend some wisdom, I would be grateful. I need to make the decision to buy the '86 car tomorrow morning. Of course, I would have asked earlier if I had known that I would have the opportunity of getting the '86. So it goes.

Many thanks, and drive well!
