What is happening when car bucks on idle? 700

In gear at a stop, there is an occasional bucking like I just hit the gas, the idle surges and car lurches forward with my foot on the brake. Rarely, it'll kill, I have a semi-rough idle, hangs alright at 900. Just wondering what this might be. Can a valve adjustment cure idle problems? Thanks
