My 1986 240 wagon has given me and my family quite a few miles of service. However, just recently it's been in a couple of tangles, and I'm debating the feasability of fixing her up vs donating her for parts or a tax write-off.
The problem is that the wife wants a minivan for the family. I'm steadfastly opposed to this, but I can see her reasoning. I made her a deal though - she gets her minivan if I get a 1984 242 Turbo. So, regardless, at some point the wagon will probably be going away. But - do I want to sell her to someone who will treat her right, fix her up, or just junk her?
She was backed into while the wife was going down a residential street, creasing the rear quarter-panel above the wheel well. This totalled the car (according to the insurance adjuster), but we bought the car back because it was still drivable and we didn't have the cashflow to buy a 'new' car. Then, she was mildly rear-ended in a parking lot, which will require replacement bumper shocks. She's also old enough to have developed squeaks and rattles, meaning new bushings all around, as well as ball joints in the front, AND a new clutch would be in order.
Lately, I just haven't had the time to put in any wrench work.
Other than that, she's a good runner, fairly clean interior-wise, and body is straight (albeit not entirely rust-free).
What would you do? And/or, does anyone in the Pacific Northwest (Portland, OR) want a fixer-upper? ;)
