My sucky Chilton manual (well, if I'd read it correctly and used the 1031 directions it wouldn't have mattered) said to count the turns and put the nut back on the same number...heck, it worked 10-15K miles ago but the pinion seal leak came back so I did it again. The rear end made noise on decel so I put it back up on the lift again and it felt like a LOT of side play.
Talked to a technician at the dealer where the Volvo Club of DC was doing a DIY (thanks to Ned @ Herb Gordon Volvo in Silver Spring) who said the book was wrong and to torque the BFNut to 148ft-lb (FAQ says 145, close enough) for all 740T rear axles. Ned even had the gonzo special pinion flange holder....genuine volvo tool...that made it easy. Some two and a half turns later it pulled to 148ft-lb and I put it back together...result...no play and no noise!
Maybe this time the pinion seal will hold for the 15 years the OEM pinion seal on the 87 764T has held!
Good info in the FAQ!
