Possible headliner repair option? 700

I am looking for another option regarding headliner repair - I do not want to live with the present dilapidated status, but am very reluctant to take the time undertake the repair kit option.

I am interested you (artistic and mechanical) opinions of another option.

- Without removing the supporting fiberboard, remove the old fabric, foam and glue.

- Prepare the surface of the fiberboard to accept glue or adhesive.

- Replacement materials: (1) Small squares or random sized patchwork of replacement fabric of a uniform color or random colors. Overlap the edges of the material as it is glued on, or (2) small squares of the carpet tile that is about ¼" thick.

My guess is this could look better than the present thumbtacks.
