I know a lot of you seem to hate the Borg Warner (BW35) Automatic tansmission in the 140, but I don't think it's all that bad. I had the 4 speed stick and then switched to a rust-free automatic car and I have to say I'm very happy with the automatic. I don't miss that heavy clutch or long stick that used to knock over my coffee cup. The BW35 shifts fast and has a nice option where when you go into low gear, it drops to the gear below what you are in (ie 3rd-2nd or 2nd-1st) rather than just to 1st gear which could blow your engine at high speed.
My only complaint with the transmission (besides not having an OD, which is not really a complaint since there were no OD automatics in 1970) is that it shifts too soon. It shifts from 1st gear to 2nd at probably 5mph! 3rd gear comes in at around 25mph unless you practically floor it. Even if I floor it I can only get it to rev the engine to 4500 rpm before it shifts up. Has anyone installed a shift-kit in this transmission?
As far as economy and performance, I don't see any noticable loss. The car still seems peppy with this transmission. Overall, I think the BW35 is a good transmission that has got a bum rep.
