fast clunking noise from rear when I brake 200 1993

When I brake from a moderate speed in my 93 245, I get a fast, low pitched, clunking noise from the rear of the car. It doesn't occur when I brake hard. The car has 109,000 miles on it. I have examined the rear suspension and cannot see any bushings that appear to need replacement, although I've not removed them for a close inspection. I cannot reproduce this noise by bouncing the rear suspension. Any ideas? Thanks.
