Is it wise to mix different brands of oil?

For example, would it matter if I added "Exxon" brand motor oil on top of "Mobil 1" , "Quaker State" , etc.

Also, what about mixing different weights of oil (ie 10w30, 10w40)

And another question.... Is it wise (or unwise) to mix "gear oil" with already present "automatic Transmission fluid" or vice versa ??

That's just the jist of it. .... Wise or unwise to mix and match different kinds of oil?
