Door panels CAN be recovered 700 1986

Well, I checked all the local automotive trim shops in town and they wanted about $175 to recover one of my door panels. Both driver's and passenger's door panels are peeling real bad on top. This has been driving me crazy.

I decided to go ahead and see if I could recover them. I started with the passenger door. I purchased a yard of black vinyl from a fabric store ($10) and a can of 3M spray glue ($10) from an auto parts store.

The old vinyl came off pretty easy from the press board. It was more difficult over the foam. When I got to the foam I heated it with a heat gun and then it came right off. I covered the door in two pieces of vinyl to make it easier to cover all the curves. I split the door right above the speaker where the door handle is. The concave areas required cutting the vinyl because there is NO way you are going to stretch it. I made triangle cuts in the corner of the curves. I then cut small triangle patches and glued them in. You can see the seams around the triangle patch but it doesn't look to bad.

I covered a piece of string/cord with vinyl to use as a trim piece to cover the seam above the speaker where the two pieces of vinyl meet. Over all I am happy with the job. Door two will be much easier. I took about 4 days over two weeks to do the panel because I would do some, glue it up, clamp, and then let it dry before moving on. The corners are difficult to get just right. You have to cut and then butt the edges.

I'll try posting some pics when I get them back.
