Almost overnight our 1991 740 turbo wagon (120,000)started leaking oil at a significant rate. It appeared to be leaking between the pan and the gasket. After cleaning the area up I found the oil was actually coming from the rear main seal. I felt that was a little early for the main seal to give up and the sudden onset was suspicious as well. Checking out the "plumbing" resulted in finding the nipple on the intake that connects to the flametrap holder (empty space on turbos) was clogged. Cleaning out the nipple has caused the leak to subside. Not having to remove the transmission to replace the rear main seal is like an early Christmas present!
