Sporadic idle after engine shampoo 900 1993

After my local mechanic shampooed my engine (to help track down an oil leak), our '93 940 Turbo Wagon started idling sporadically - switching between 600 and 1100 RPM every second or so. There is a small hose coming off of the main air intake hose, just over the alternator. If you squeeze that small hose near the upper clamp just once then the sporadic idling goes away. The hose looks good and there don't appear to be any vacuum leaks. The problem has come back a couple of times when we restart the car, but not the last several times... Any ideas anybody?
