rust ques. 200 '81

hola.. I bought a new canadian 240 gl last weekend but it is still at the shop.. I was wondering.. there is some surface rust and that is unavoidable, and one of the floorboards is shot but that I can take care of... but.. I was wondering how common is it for the subframe to rust?? Would I been able to tell by driving it? I drove it and everything( except for a shot rear bushing) seemed okay!
