Bought a 740 Turbo for my 16 y/o son (um, well..OK, I flipped a coin with him when we bought it and he won...drat) knowing that the heater didn't work. Ordered a valve from IPD, but until it gets here I tinkered a bit, and this is what happened.

Status:

1) Car warmed up. Both hoses going into firewall near heat valve control are hot.

2) Forced valve lever in, then out, trying interior sliding heat control and fan each time at max heat setting.

3) I get air blowing from the vents, and if I use my imagination it m-i-g-h-t be a very slight bit warmer than with heat slider control on low heat. But definitely no real heat.

4) The upper interior lever has been tried on everything from defrost to AC (yep, I'm desperate) - no change.

Talked to an IPD guy on the phone, and he wasn't heater guru - so now I humbly turn to the real experts - you!

So what's my (heat related) problem guys/gals ? Anything inside the car that I need to adjust/repair ?

Since my wife won't let me drive her 850, and my son is sleeping in the 740, I get to buy any Volvo I want! I don't really like the new ones (OK, they're Volvos/Fords, but...), I've got my heart semi-set on a 940 turbo wagon, plus or minus the turbo part. I'm an old fart, I actually LIKE wagons, not into racing, but really like the Volvo line. Seems that the 740 and 240 keep drifting into my selection fantasy too. What to do???

Questions:

- 940's seem to be well though of - any years better than others?

- 960s - no? (Yeh I read the FAQ, but what's the real skinny?)

- Are the 940 bodies/chassis just a relabeled 740, or ...?

- Best 740/760 year(s)?

- Having owned a 240 (sold it at 79,000 miles to pay for the 850 - hit me someone!!!), I remember it as more solid than 740/940 series. My fantasy, or fact? How do the 940/740 series hold up in a crash, relative to the 240?

- Am I nuts to not pick up another 850, or would you go for the 740/940 instead? (The 850 seems so, well, LOW, and tiny, but goes OK)

OK, deep breaths, calm down...Oooooo, I hate Volvo withdrawl !
