depressurizing fuel lines 200 1990

Hi

I'm in the process of replacing the fuel level sending unit (90 - 240 wagon) and I'm wondering about how long does it take the car to stall out after you remove the fuel pump fuse. I've got both the pump and main pump relay fuses out and am waiting for the car to die now. It doesn't seem to be working...am I missing something?
