Bski,
A new set of carbon brushes lists for $5.00 (part# 1362710). If you don't need a new regulator I certainly wouldn't purchase one.
The easiest way to remove the old brushes and leave an avenue for soldering in the new ones is to drill out the solder point of the old brushes. I first file down the soft solder on the old attachments and then drill with a 1/16" drill. This will remove the old woven wires and allow the old brushes to be removed. The new brushes along with their springs can then be inserted in the brush holders and pulled down to a point where the woven wire length that is left between the brush and the solder point prevents them from coming out of the holders. Once the correct length has been determined simply bend the woven wire where it exits the drill hole so that it is temporarily held in place. Then solder the wire in the drill hole and cut off the excess length. Reinstall in the alternator- remembering that it is necessary to "tip" them into position so that when you stand the assembly up to reattach it to the back of the alternator the brushes are forced back into the brush holders.
