sudden brake failure 200 1990

Hi all,

Driving home last night, my brake pedal on my '90 250DL suddenly went all the way to the floor. No braking. I limped home using the parking brake. Now I had just bought this car last July and it came with all the records, very well cared for by the PO. I let it sit for 5 weeks while I was out of the country and had been driving it normally for a week when this happened.

This morning I checked the brake fluid and it was down by about a cup. I filled it and pumped it a few times and now the brakes work fine. I took it to my mechanic who drove it and declared the brakes to work fine. We even did a few emergency stops. However, we decided to replace the master cylinder on Monday since it's only $150 parts/labor for peace of mine.

What are your opinions about this decision to replace the master cylinder? The rotors, calibers and pads all look good and the "brake failure" light never went on. What gives?

Paul
