Poor Mans Adjustable Cam Gear 200 84

I have thought a bout puting the adjustable timing gear on my 84 240 turbo. Is that thing really neccesary? Can't I just set the timing marks advanced or reterded when I change my timing belt? Has anyone done this? What would be the best adjusment to make for quicker take offs? Thanks in advance for any help.
