First the symptoms: The car is my wife's 740 GL sw with 185K miles. The original problem was hard starting either cold or hot. Later the car would suddenly quit, sometimes in the third lane during rush hour. To get by until a solution was found, I would start the car by squirting a small amount of gas into one of the hose barbs on the throttle body. When I did this the car would start immediately. I checked for spark and found that to be OK. I replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump check valve. Likewise the fuel regulator. All no help...I attached a piece of hose to the return barb of the fuel regulator. I was amazed as to how much gas is pumped through the return line of the fuel pressure regulator during the 1 to 2 second run by the fuel pumps during start up. Since I have no pressure gages that test convinced me that changing the fuel pumps would be a waste. By this time, my wife's patience was wearing thin. She was not just a little unhappy with the above starting routine. My next solution was to install a push button on the dash so that she would have a
manual choke. This was done by attaching a wire to the ground side of the cold start injector and grounding it through the switch while starting. This effectively wired around the Tempature Sensor but still left it operational for the winter. This put a "band aid" on the Starting problem. All during this time the computor set the following codes...2-2-1, 2-3-1, and 1-1-3. So I changed the O2 sensor and the car still refused to start without the help of the "choke".
Previously, I had resoldered the Fuel Pump relay but remembered reading somewhere in this site about the Radio Suppression Relay. I located the relay in the Hayne's Electrical Diagram and found that it provides Ground to the injectors. Removing the cover from the relay the Cold Solder Joints on the solder side of the circuit board instantly became obvious. Resoldering and reinstalling the unit took no time and the car started without the help of the Choke. It has been a few weeks now and there has been no reoccurence. Whew!
