checking brake booster at wreckers 1800 1973

I was planning on pulling a breake booster from a P1800 for a friend. Then I realized I have no clue how to tell if it is working. I understand they can be rebuilt? How can I test it on the car and how about on the bench or in a car with missing brake parts, like calipers for example.
