vacuum pump 200 1977

Hi guys, anybody out there run into this, There is a vacuum pump bolted to the valve cover, it provides extra vacuum to operate the brakes...Since it was noisy I rebuilt it replacing all the rubber parts inside, still noisy so I installed a "silent valve cover". I noticed increased brake pedal effort which I guess I will get used to. Also noted was I think the advance curve is now off, it does not accelerate as fast as it did. Should I fix the pump and put it on or will advancing the distrib a couple degrees fix things up? I can live with stiff brakes but not decreased engine performance.
