transmission types 200

Long ago had an 87 240 DL wagon that I had to part with when I moved overseas. So now I'm looking for another 240 wagon. Question on tranmissions. Mine was, what I would call, a full 5-speed rather than a 4-speed with OD button. Fun to drive. Almost all the used ones I see now (I'm looking at early 1990s)are automatics. Were all offered through all the years? Does this board have a collective opinion about reliability etc. of the automatic vs. the two types of manuals?
