Splicing end on KickDown Cable (?) 200 1986

My kickdown cable broke about 1/2" from the slug that fits onto the throttle pulley, and a reputable tranny guy suggested splicing a hunk of cable onto the end, rather than going through all the expense of buying and installing a new one. Anybody ever do this? And how exactly?

(Before ya say "cheap bastard!" consider that in the past week or so, I've had rotors and pads put this baby, plus had calipers and master cylinder on my trusty Saab, plus had all f&r suspension bushings replaced on this 245 in the past month - feels lovely BTW - plus I have some fuel inj. driveability problems to be sorted out, so it's time for a cheap solution for a change dammit!)
