About 2 months ago, I noticed a considerable puddle of fluid accumulating on my driveway. At the time I believed that said fluid was oil (it was brownish - not green or red), so I took the car to a mechanic for a die test. He washed the engine, and determined right away that I had a leak in my head gasket. Because my uncle and I do most of the repairs ourselves, and he's been ill, we haven't yet got to the repair, but I've been keeping a close eye on my fluids and such. I'm loosing less that a litre of oil a month. I've kept the oil topped up, and the color of the oil isn't getting milky, nor do I smell exhaust in my rad fluid (signs that the head gasket is blown, right?). However, I recently noticed that my brake fluid was low, and that the puddle under my car isn't as big as it once was (I'm parking in a different spot). I haven't had this car for long, but the PO said there was some work done on the master cylinder. Anyway, my questions are these:
1. is it possible that I have a really small leak in my head gasket or are they always really big leaks?
2. could a mechanic detect a really small leak in the head gasket using a die test after only a few minutes of the engine running? (I'm not sure how much I trust this guy)
3. does brake fluid floresce, thereby resulting in misdiagnosis?
thanks. Maggie
