OK folks, I know I did a bad thing and I need advice on how bad it is. I was replacing the cap and rotor on a 1989 760 Turbo, 230FT motor, and the new cap slipped and busted the sensor on the botom of the dist loose. I think it's a hall effect sensor, but I'm not sure. I managed to put the new rotor on, and get the sensor back in place somewhat with the dist cap holding it down.
First, what is this sensor and what does it do? Is it a bear to replace? Can I drive the car with it held in place by the cap? The engine started and ran smoothly, I'm going to get some gas and see how it drives. If this is very unstable and the car could die at any moment, that would be important to know.
Thanks for any help you may have.
