Air Filter Removal? 700 1987

I know this sounds crazy, but, can anyone tell me how to remove/replace the air filter on an 87 760Turbo? I recently bought the car and tried to remove the old air filter but the turbo pipe/hose and the steel lip it fastens to block the removal of the air filter. Is this uncommmon, only a problem for this year model? I've previously owned two 240's and one 740 (none of which were turbos, and never had problems doing the light maintenance myself. Thanks in advance for your help.
