looking to upgrade.... 200 '88

i've asked this question on the 800 series area but didn't get but two responses. i want to look for a 800/900 series and wa warned about how complex the 800's can be. i'm finding 940/945's in the area fairly cheap (ex. a 1990/1 for less than 4k.) i own a 244dl and want to know how they compare (i'm not looking for the obvious of style, grade, etc.) i want to know how it compares to longevity, manitenance, etc. also, when i do start looking, what are some things to look for, stay away from, caution, etc???
