Stuck in Overdrive 200 1990

As I was driving yesterday, I noticed that my overdrive light had lit up. At first I thought that this may be simply a problem with the switch (and not actually with the overdrive), but I then noticed that the engine was revving at a higher rate, like I was stuck in a lower gear (3rd?) going 55 mph. I tried to de-activate the overdrive by pressing the button on the shifter, but to no avail.

I had the transmission overhauled only two years ago. Does anyone know what this could be? Is this dangerous for me to be driving at higher speeds (55-65mph)?
