idle? 200 1989

Traveling to see the family, car stalls at stoplight with my wife driving, she can't start it. I get it going, kept my foot on the gas. It was idling about 500 rpm. After letting it sit in my in-laws driveway, I start it and all is well. The car was cold after the restart, outside temp today not too cold 35 degrees or so. Any ideas?
