my 1989 745ti automatic has developed a worrysome characteristic. sometimes, when i am on the highway, going about 60-70 mph. i will floor it to pass someone. at that time, the automatic will drop down a gear and out the back window i will see a brief puff of white smoke(?). is this a head gasket, or rings? is it likely to be terminal? this seems to happen more in the cold (even after a 10 minute warm-up) with engine speeds below 3500rpm.

please help
