Remembering Lucid (Bruce Young)

Many times when I am working on one of our Volvos I will remember something that I learned from Lucid. He was an amazing resource and contributor here at the Brickboard. I miss his presence here at RWD very much. Rest in peace, Bruce.

Bruce drifted back into my mind as I was removing a rear caliper for a warranty exchange. He shared the trick of pressing down the brake pedal a few inches and holding it there with an appropriate length of wood. Of course that prevents the system from draining the fluid from a detached brake line. I have used the technique any number of times and have shared it with friends who are doing brake work.

What I didn't do when installing the new caliper was tap it with a hammer to dislodge those pesky air bubbles that can cling to the interior chamber of a new caliper (a trick I probably learned from Bruce as well). After normal bleeding and driving for a day I realized the pedal was not as "good" as it was prior to the replacement. After I removed the wheel and opened the bleeder I was rewarded with sound of air exiting the caliper and the return to what I considered to be normal pedal function.
