KICK DOWN CABLE ADJUSTMENT QUESTION - 93 240 200

Have read many post on loosening or tightening the cable with the 2 nuts. What is the reference point - the spindle or the transmission?
To 'loosen' for lower shift point, you move the cable towards the tranny? or towards the spindle.
