Limp mode. 700

Finally figured out why my 1988 volvo 745t kept losing steady power intermediately. Pulling over and shutting the engine off, waiting a few seconds and restarting regained smooth power. Checked, diagnosing and cleaning all things related did nothing for the intermediate low power when boosting. Figured if I turned the ignition off and back on cured the problem momentarily and given the high mileage 243000 just might be a worn ignition switch. After pulling all the covers off underneath and top of the steering wheel I soon realized no access to the switch. Glad I can figure out unlisted procedures. Access was easy once I removed the two lower screws that hold the instrument panel in place. There was enough room to remove the cluster and access the electrical switch. Not a whole lot of room but, using an extend straight screw driver tip and a 1/4 inch box wrench and some duct tape to hold the bit onto the wrench, the use of a flash light and a telescoping mirror, 3 hours later the switch is in and everything button back up. Woah ! The intermediate problem is gone and the car runs better then ever since I've owned it for the last 20 years. So....replacing a high mileage ignition switch is highly recommend. I did open the original ignition switch and found some of the electrical contacts pitted. It was the resetting of the ignition switch each time the engine went into limp mode where I had to feather the throttle that directed me to change out the high mileage ignition switch. $38 and some hand cramping was definitely worth changing the switch. I highly recommend anyone with over 200000 mile on their old Volvo to change the ignition switch. The faulty switch had me chasing the electric gremilns. I now have uninterrupted power range. One of these winter I just might install the new heater core. Happy Holidaze Everyone.
