I have run into a mechanic's dilemma in my efforts to change the water pump on the 240.
One of the holding bolts has a nut on the end of it. This bolt holds the water pipe clamp. The car has an EGR set of pipes that are very close to this nut and that are connected to the exhaust manifold. Everything being rusted together for a long time now.
I looked at a number of videos about replacing the water pump on a 240 and none of the cars being worked on has this EGR system around to interfere with the water pump pipe and its holding nut. Some of these videos advise getting this particular bolt and nut on first so as to avoid water leaks from the pipe.
I see a couple of possibilities but wouldn't mind having your opinion as to the best way to go forward. I am thinking of using a longer bolt with the nut taped to a ten mm wrench and pulling everything together first and then later trying to get the correct bolt and nut into place. A big problem is the bolt head end which is visible but which has a casting that prevents getting a socket on the bolt head. One is supposed to spin the nut onto the bolt from the hidden side while the bolt head is kept in place with the casting. This is not a wonderful arrangement.
The second possibility is to disconnect and pull the exhaust manifold away from the block first. This could end up in a machine shop if the bolts are unwilling to cooperate and prefer to break instead of allowing themselves to be unscrewed.
Do you see a third alternatiive.
