Noisy cold 5 speed 200 1988

I have noticed that in 90 degree ambient, my trans is noisy when cold, then quiet after a few miles.
This morning in 55 degree ambient, it was REALLY noisy until warm. I have not had this car long, and it was terribly, TERRIBLY maintained. There is no telling what or how much of what is in this trans.( I suspect rally thick oil. I understand there is controversy as to what to replace the fluid with when I drain it.
Suggestions?
