I'm putting new brake pads on my '94 940, it's an ATE caliper and pads (live rear axis), and the old ones came with 4 shims, 2 stainless, 2 coated, on each caliper. I checked the manual, that's exactly what it specifies, adding that "in the future" the shim design may be dropped in favor of pads with anti-squeal coating (I think Bosch pads may be of the "newer" design). I've got a set of new ATE pads (metal back) and 4 stainless shims from FCP (didn't realize that I'll need 8 to do both sides). I checked around, it doesn't appear that the coated shim is available, not even sure of the part number. Wonder if I'd be better off reusing old coated shims, or is it worth the wait to order a new set (the job can wait till next weekend, that's not a problem).
