’58 Duett Brake Upgrade
After driving my Duett for a while, I’m discovering for myself what everybody already knows. The brakes are a bit scary! Searching the internet I’ve come across several plans of action. I’m wondering which road to take…
I would like to not make any changes that can’t be reversed in the future.
1. Do nothing. Keep it stock, it’s a rare car! Always living in fear, since everybody on the road can stop in about half the distance.
2. Install a remote brake booster for 4 wheel drums. This would only reduce brake pedal pressure and do nothing about brake fade. I won’t be running any rallys so this may be a fairly easy option.
3. Disk brakes from a 122s. From my searches, this improves braking slightly but still requires lots of pedal pressure. Main advantages: much reduced brake fade, self adjusting and I happen to have most of the parts necessary.
4. Add a remote booster from a 122 to option #3, the disk brake install.
There are those who have installed hanging pedals, monster disk brakes, huge tires, V6/V8 etc. but that’s not my plan. I just want to be able to keep up with traffic and be confident that I can slow down with traffic.
My question is: Which of the 4 scenarios makes the most sense?
Thanks,
-Tracy
