Speedometer dead, now what to do? 200 1989

All,

The Big Red Sled's Speedometer gave up the ghost yesterday. However, the Odometer and tripometer are still functioning correctly.

So I have two clusters lying around in various states of destruction; one a station wagon, the other a sedan.

The 9800 needs the most work, so I opted to throw the sedan speedo in just to rule out a potential wiring issue as I did not have a 9 Vdc wallwort to plug into the back of the car to test the whole circuit as Art B. had posted in a previous post.

I put the sedan speedo in and the speedometer worked just fine. I know its off, but I didn't care. Just trying to eliminate things.

So I thought to myself, self, since the Odometer works, that must mean that the actual speedo motor is bad. So I popped the sedan speedo out and swapped out the speedo motor from the original cluster with the speedo motor from the 9800 cluster that needs a lot of work and no dice, still a dead speedo. This is thus leading me to believe that the circuit board that receives the signal from the differential is somewhat bad and/or dead in one way or another.

My plan is tomorrow I will bench test the original speedo with proper equipment and verify if this is indeed the problem.

Can any one point out any obvious holes that I might have here in my thought process?

Thanks,

Matt
