Gas smell/stolen gas cap 200 1988

Hi,

So if somebody stole my gas cap (assuming in the process of trying to steal gas) is it normal for there to be a strong gas smell in the cabin? It's intermittent, can smell it with windows down/freeway speeds.

Also, that seems like something that should resolve fairly quickly smell-wise once the new gas cap is on. My concern is that I drove it after buying a replacement gas cap & could still smell gas after the new cap was put on.

My mechanic is out until Tuesday. I am going to look around the tank area to see there's any other damage as a result of the attempted fuel theft. I'm worried that whoever was monkeying with the car may have tried more creative ways to get more gas out of it, possibly damaging the tank or a line. The fact that I can still smell gas after replacing the cap makes me nervous.

Thanks for any insights!!!
- Susan
