Turbo gauge 900 1992

When I accelerate slowly I can see the needle on the turbo gauge climb with RPMs to about half of the display. Then it drops back to the left to about 1/4 with the engine sounding loudly. This doesn't appear right. How far should the needle go to the right under acceleration ? I've never seen mine go pass the middle.
