I recently changed out the parking brake cable. 900 1994

1994 940t 88K

I recently changed out the cables on this car.

I found the old shoes' lining was detached when I removed the rear rotors. I cleaned up the components and used epoxy (Liquid Metal) to reattach the lining. I clamped them in place with Cclamps while curing, otherwise they did not match the radius of the shoe.

The FAQ's suggested that aftermarket replacement cables were a poor fit, but that was not my experience. I ordered replacements from FCP Groton and there were no issues. The left cable was PEX and the right was Pro Parts.

The left cable extends all the way to the parking brake handle and is held in place by bending metal pieces to encompass the end of the cable (they had to be bent away to remove the old cable). The routing of the cable includes a clamp like device who's bolt was rusted and had to be cut off with a die grinder. I removed the rear seat bottom and pulled the carpet loose at the ends in order to pry up the carpet so as to move the cable under the carpet and into the console area. Screwing the cable adjustment all the way in made it easy to attach the two cables together. I was able to salvage the two pins and clevis clips to be reused.

Photos of the orientation of the shoes and springs were needed for reference in reassembly.

The long spring and slotted bar can be attached to the two shoes and then that assembly can be put into place behind the two clips that hold them. I reattached the short spring by reaching through the hole in the axle flange with a screw driver that I forced into the spring coil. After hooking one end of the spring on the lower shoe I rotated the axle against the screw driver shaft which raised the spring and allowed me to hook the other end (after several failed attempts).

The plastic pieces that the right cable moves through were hanging loose. I applied epoxy and held them in place with small zip ties.

Replacing the rotors was called out as a bit of a problem in the FAQ's. I found that to be true. I shortened the slotted pieces that hold the shoes apart by about 3/32" and used a die grinder to cut the slot deeper by that much as well. I also ran the die grinder disk around the edge and surface of the rotor to remove the rust and sharp edge- that resulted in the rotors slipping into place with no additional problems.

It was more work than I had anticipated but it is nice to have a working parking brake.
