repaired parcel shelf 120-130 1967

I'm getting our '67 220 ready for a road trip and decided to have a look at the parcel shelf. The pressed paper shelf had taken on more of a trough shape and pulled out of the tin back.

To repair it - Remove the screw that holds the wire support to the tin back, dampen the bottom of the cardbaord, 30 seconds under the hose is plenty. Give the water a chance to soak in and soften the paper a little. Cut a plywood caul to fit inside the wire support. Lay the shelf upside down on your workbench, position the caul, and set a cement block on the assembly. The weight needs to be heavy enough to press the cardboard flat. Leave it overnight or until the shelf is dry.

The back edge of the shelf was frayed so I worked a little Elmer's Glue into the egde of the paper to stiffen it up. Pry the channel at the base of the back tin open a little and run a small bead of black RTV in there, press the shelf back into the channel and recrimp the channel to the shelf. Reinstall the clamp screw.

Obviously this won't work very well if a big chunk is missing from the pressed paper piece.

I'll let you know how it holds up.

Greg
