M41 transmission inspection 120-130

Hi, I have had for a few years now two M41 transmissions, one a J from a 1970? 144 and a D from an 1800-year undetermined. The plan has been to put one in my wagon which currently has an M40. Both were said to be in good working order but I am an eternal skeptic. So before I install one or the other of these I'd like to verify that they are in good working order.

Besides just looking for the obvious, woggily shaft, burnt or broken gears or maybe a rough bearing-if I can even tell if a bearing is bad in situ-what else can I do?

Is a complete breakdown and reassembly the only way to satisfy any doubts?

1-10, 1 being easy, is it to take apart and reassemble both the transmission and overdrive?
