adjusting the rear hatch 120-130 1967

The rear hatch on our 220 does not have a uniform gap around the edges when it is shut. The gap along the roof is ~3/16". At the tailgate the gap at the bottom of the side is ~1/2". Moving the latch on the tailgate all the way forward helps a little, but the hatch has to be shut (slammed) pretty firmly to get it to latch. and the gap along the side is still not even. That does not seem right.

Do they usually close with an even gap along the side ? If so, any ideas on what to check ?
