I have probably had 16 B230 engines in 740s and 940s and our family still has 8 running. I have never had a problem with oil consumption, even with my daughters car with 306K miles on it. I have used 5W-30 Mobil 1 for years and have change filter every 5K miles and oil every 10K miles.
Anyway, I bought a 93 940 with 130K on the odometer and with lots of minor issues. I changed the front and rear crank seals, cam, and idler seals, and lots of other non-engine stuff. The engine runs great but, uses a quart of oil every 300 miles. The oil separator was cleaned and the flame arrestor removed so I don't think there is a back pressure issue but could be wrong. The oil filler cap does bounce a little at times at idle but no more than the other car engines. I haven't done a compression check yet but it does runs so well I haven't seen a need. There are no oil leaks.
The other 8 running B230 engines take maybe a quart every 1.5KK-3K miles.
Any ideas would be appreciated in getting the oil consumption down.
