First, thanks again to everyone who has helped so far. Swedish Baklava's video and comments were very helpful, as was Trev29's follow up. I went over the install again and checked with my local Volvo mechanic over the phone - describing everything and it looks like I'm good on the driver's side. Thanks guys!
Now a new problem! I started the install on the passenger side, packed the bearings after seating the new outer races in the hub. Seated the rubber seal and installed the inner bearing into the hub with the metal retaining ring. When I went to position the hub on the spindle, the inner bearing stuck on the spindle and it felt like I couldn't seat the hub all the way. I understand from reading around, and looking in Bentley (diagram 6 I believe in the wheel bearing section), that the inner bearing can stick to the spindle requiring special tool 2722 or some such puller to remove it. Is it normal for it to stick on installation, and not after many miles of use? As I tried to reposition the hub I was having difficulty removing it and then it popped off as the inner bearing released from the hub and remains stuck now to the spindle.
Is it just me, or is it normal for the inner bearing to become stuck to the spindle on install? It appears slightly cocked, so I might not have had it seated in the outer race properly, but it seemed to be flush as I gently tapped the metal retaining ring into place. Obviously I didn't have that issue on the other side.
This is a brand new bearing kit, so I'm not in the mood to hack/grind/heat it off and ruin it. I suppose yet another trip to harbor freight is in store to get a puller set?
